CEMEX Continues To Play Important Role in Grand Paris Project

April 19, 2017

From technical and logistical support to the removal of tons of excavated soil, CEMEX continues to play a role in Paris’ great transformation.

After contributing to several stages of the Grand Paris project in 2016, CEMEX continues to provide solutions, expertise, and logistical support for this large-scale project. For the Bagneux underground station, future terminus of the extended line 4 of the Paris Metro, CEMEX is supplying over 60,000 cubic meters of specialty concrete to serve this line’s more than 740,000 daily travelers.

CEMEX participated in the two phases required to complete the covered trench for line 4, which consisted of tunnels, open-air grounds for the future station, reinforced foundation walls, as well as maintenance and switching systems for trains at the end of the line. CEMEX met both the technical and aesthetic requirements of this station by rotating trucks and supplying materials early in the morning, while minimizing the impact on local residents.

CEMEX is also contributing to the development of the Grand Paris Express, a ring route surrounding Paris with new and extended lines to serve the city’s metropolitan area. Over the next decade, it is expected that around 45,000,000 tons of earth will be excavated during the construction of the Grand Paris Express. This should increase Île-de-France’s estimated excavation volumes by 10% to 20% each year.

Together with the logistics solutions company Innofreight, CEMEX presented the Grand Paris authorities with a logistics plan to remove the excavated earth by train, including an industrial automatic swap body cleaning system that will alternate between inert and contaminated soil.

“Our system delivers significant advantages since a tunneler excavates an average of 2,400 metric tons of earth each day—equal to two trains or 80 trucks,” noted Benjamin Lecendrier, Major Projects Manager at CEMEX France, "It also offers increased safety not only at worksites, where the risks inherent to simultaneous activity should be reduced, but also for road users in the Île-de-France region, who should expect see fewer trucks working on this project on the roads.”

As exemplified by the Grand Paris project, CEMEX strives to build long-lasting relationships with its customers. From foundations to technical and logistical support, CEMEX continuously provides high-quality products and services to one of the most notable infrastructure projects currently under development in France.

CEMEX is a global building materials company that provides high-quality products and reliable services to customers and communities in more than 50 countries. CEMEX has a rich history of improving the well-being of those it serves through innovative building solutions, efficiency advancements, and efforts to promote a sustainable future.
