CEMEX Participates in Moselle Lock Expansion in Germany

CEMEX is supplying approximately 58,000 cubic meters of concrete for the second lock chamber of the Moselle River in Trier, Germany.

Between 2014 and 2017, after over 50 years of continuous operation, 10 locks on the Moselle River in Germany were gradually expanded with a second chamber. To ensure uninterrupted casting, CEMEX Germany supplied almost 60,000 cubic meters of concrete utilizing a mobile mixing plant located just 500 meters from the job site.

The mobile plant’s three-cubic-meter twin shaft mixer achieved a production capacity of approximately 100 cubic meters per hour. Operating according to the highest quality standards, this high-performance mobile on-site mixing plant can be quickly and easily erected, delivering customized, cost-effective concrete for large construction sites with substantial concrete demand.

The expansion of the chamber lock on the Moselle River in Germany will facilitate the flow of vessel traffic—with over 10,000 cargo-carrying vessels passing through per year and freight transport expected to increase to almost 17 million tons by 2025.

Due to its age and condition, the extensive repair work involved closing the lock every year, bringing ship traffic on the Moselle River to a standstill. Thanks to this additional chamber, the waterway and shipping offices of Trier and Koblenz, Germany, should be able to perform future scheduled and unscheduled repairs without interrupting the river’s traffic.
