CEMEX Supplies Custom Concrete for Cutting-Edge Silicon Valley Office Complex

December 1, 2016

Massive project calls for 1.2 million square feet of concrete.

The Central & Wolfe Campus, located in the heart of Silicon Valley in Sunnyvale, Calif., is a unique, LEED-Platinum office complex designed to help the world’s leading tech companies attract and retain top talent with state-of-the art amenities and reimagined workspaces.

Developed by Landbank and designed by HOK Architects, the campus consists of three, four-story connected office buildings with three levels of underground parking and a standalone parking garage—in all, 770,000 square feet (71,535 square meters) of usable space calling for 1.2 million square feet (111,484 square meters) of concrete.

“This is a massive project. Typically, a project like this would be built in phases, with one building going up at a time. But not here. We’ve been doing a mat pour—about 3,000 cubic yards (2,294 cubic meters) of concrete each—every weekend for about 10 weeks now,” said Kohlton Kauffman of Webcor, the concrete subcontractor for the project and one of California’s biggest and most successful commercial-contracting companies.

To meet the demands of the mat pours and work within the parameters of Sunnyvale’s weekend work hours, CEMEX supplied 500 cubic yards (380 cubic meters) of concrete per hour out of two local plants for each individual pour.

“In addition to providing a remarkable quantity of concrete, CEMEX has done a great job of providing the types of specialty concrete mixes that we need for this project. They helped create special column mixes that allow us to get the concrete into the structure’s unique and challenging spaces. A challenging project like this couldn’t happen without those mixes,” Kauffman said.

“We are proud to be able to supply our customers, like Webcor, with custom concrete for projects like the Central & Wolfe Campus. These projects are what make Northern California such a great place to live and work, and CEMEX is here to help make them a reality,” said Eric Wittmann, CEMEX Regional President for the West USA Region.

CEMEX has been a part of the Silicon Valley landscape for decades, supplying concrete for some of the area’s most recognizable structures and companies.

“What’s happening in Silicon Valley is not only important to the rest of the country; it’s important to the rest of the world. The projects—past and present—that CEMEX has supplied here are iconic. They house the world’s leading tech companies,” said Bill Blake, CEMEX Director of Sales for the Bay Area.

With additions like the Central & Wolfe Campus, Silicon Valley is cementing itself not only as the nation’s foremost tech hub, but also as the world headquarters of state-of-the-art, next-generation workspaces.

“It’s exciting to be a part of this community and these projects, and we plan on being here for a long time to come. This is just the beginning for CEMEX USA and Silicon Valley,” CEMEX Senior Territory Manager Rick Cook said.

The campus consists of three, four-story connected office buildings with three levels of underground parking and a standalone parking garage.
